instructions which he may have received from the War
Office the Governor will be at liberty to act upon them
as if they had been received direct from the Colonial
Office. This liberty apparently was in such a casO 85
this confined to hoisting the Royal Standard at Government House bad I so directed, the flags of the Headquarter House
and His Majesty's Ships remaining at half-mast as had
been arranged between the General Officer Commanding and
the Admiral before any intimation was conveyed to me. -

of the arrangement, affords I venture to think some justi+
fication for the last paragraph of my: Despatch No.55 of
12th. February, Had the Admiral been approached by the
Governor of the Colony instead of the General Officer.
Commanding it might not have been found so impossible to
obey the instructions received which seemed to bear upon
their face the assumption that arrangements had been made
at home in concert between the War Office and the
Admiralty.
